Being from a beer brewing town in Germany, and having a big interest in beer I wanted to experience the different styles here in Vancouver. The Downtown Vancouver area has been in the news a lot lately for the large boom of brewery’s currently in operation and opening up in the next year. Excitedly, I began my journey at the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Downtown Vancouver after work and walked 5 minutes to the Aqua bus (a small foot passenger ferry). I then rode the aqua bus to Granville Island in False Creek where the popular Granville Island Brewery is located. There, I had the chance to try several of their tasty beers, including their famous Honey Lager and their current limited release Ginger Beer in their tasting room. While walking through Granville Island, I spotted the Public Market; a colourful and agile place where fishermen sell their fresh seafood and florists make you feel like being outside in the nature.
I returned to Downtown Vancouver by the Aqua bus ferry service, and took a bus to get to the Steamworks Brewery in Gastown at Waterfront Station. There I spent the whole evening talking with the brew master and tasting some of their selected beer (I highly recommend their Saison). I had to cut my evening off short, as it was getting late, but I will continue on my quest as there are still 10+ places in Vancouver that I need to discover.
